// AI for welding supply distributors
AI for welding supply distributors, tested on cert requests and bench tickets you already closed.
For independent distributors selling filler metals, welding equipment, hardgoods and safety products to fabricators and plants. Start with filler metal certificate requests or with welding equipment repair quotes. Either one runs as a free AI proof of concept on copies of 20 to 30 requests or tickets your branches have finished. Nobody logs in to your ERP, and no live order or ticket is touched. Your reviewer, the person at the branch who knows that work best, decides whether it passed.

What lands on a welding supply branch after the sale
Filler metal certificate requests
A customer asks for paper on wire or rod that already shipped. AWS classification, lot or heat, the certificate type asked for and the PO's requirements get set beside the maker's document for that lot, with anything missing listed for the person who sends it.
See the certificate requests pageWelding equipment repair quotes
A repair ticket for a power source, wire feeder or plasma cutter read into a draft quote: model and serial, complaint, technician's findings, parts and labor lines, warranty status as stated, and what your service manager has to decide.
See the repair quotes pageAnnual supply bids
School district, county and plant bids listing rod, wire, gas and hardgoods line by line, set against your item numbers and last bid's prices for whoever finishes it.
Consigned stock counts
Monthly counts from a customer's weld crib laid against what was invoiced, with each difference listed for the branch to chase.
// Why these two first
The maker holds the paper, and the branch has to go get it
The classification on the box is the maker's own word. One filler metal maker's guide to product approvals says an AWS classification on the label is a promise from the manufacturer, and that AWS itself doesn't inspect or witness the testing. The same guide says the engineer of record or a certified welding engineer is usually the one who obtains a certificate of conformance. That request often works its way back through the fabricator to the branch that sold the wire, after the order has long since closed.
Finding the document is half the work. One maker runs a public search that returns a Certified Material Test Report when you type in a lot number, for a named list of its product families, and warns that a lot written with a backslash and a year has to be entered with an underscore. Other products and other makers go through other routes. Your branch's closed requests show how your people really track each one down, which makes them a fair test.
One branch, three federal codes. The 2022 NAICS index files welding supplies under 423840, pulls welding gases out to 424690, and puts welding machinery and equipment under 423830. Gas paperwork runs on cylinders and customers, a separate job of its own. A certificate follows a lot and a repair follows a serial number, and both end in a record you can check afterward.
Repairs get sold right next to rod. Mesa Unified School District #4 in Arizona wrote one solicitation for welding supplies, gases, equipment and repairs, for its operations department and the welding classes at six high schools. One part of the bid covers gases; the other covers welding rods, goggles, aprons, helmets, gloves and repairs. A school system in Inverness, Florida asked for firm unit prices on listed items and a percentage mark-up over cost, or a discount off list, on anything else. A single account can bring your branch a rod order, a bid and a broken machine in the same month.
The bench is often where a warranty claim starts. One large maker's warranty page counts more than 800 authorized service distributors worldwide. OSHA's arc welding rule, 29 CFR 1910.254(d)(9)(i), takes equipment out of use once a defect is reported, until its safety has been assured, and leaves repairs to qualified personnel. A machine on your bench is a machine someone isn't welding with, and your quote is the thing they're waiting on.
One limit covers both jobs. The proof of concept never touches your ERP, a live order or a live ticket. It never recommends a filler metal, attests to a certificate or decides whether a repair is covered. A qualified person at the branch sends every certificate, and a service manager approves every quote. Codes and rules are named here so your reviewer can follow the thinking, not as legal or engineering advice.
// How the test runs
Three steps from a closed file to a live month
- Step 01
Name the job and the person who judges it
The owner picks one job and the reviewer, often an inside sales lead or branch manager for certificates, or the service manager for repair quotes. The success criteria go in writing, you get a price range for the live job, and the NDA is signed, all before a single file leaves.
- Step 02
Run it on files your branches finished
Send 20 to 30 closed cert requests with the pick tickets, POs and makers' documents behind them, or 20 to 30 repair tickets with the quotes that followed. We call it the sandbox: a free AI proof of concept on your own past work. If a file has to stay in your building, your reviewer helps us build a look-alike.
- Step 03
After a yes, new work for about 30 days
The same job runs on new requests or tickets for about 30 days, and someone at the branch approves each item before it reaches a customer or posts anywhere. Any further job is a separate decision at its own price.
Priced per job. You get a range before the proof of concept and a fixed price before you sign.
On the call Rob sets the range from three counts: certificate requests each month, tickets through the bench, and how many makers' paperwork your files hold.
// Questions
What welding supply owners ask first
Does the test need our ERP or our repair ticket system?
Will the AI tell a customer which filler metal to use?
We carry several makers' wire and rod. Is that a problem?
Do you decide whether a repair falls under warranty?
We also fill and rent cylinders. Does that belong in this test?
Is any of this legal or engineering advice?
