Low-slope commercial roofing supply

// AI for roofing supply distributors

AI for roofing supply distributors, tested on roof packages and job accounts you already closed.

For distributors selling low-slope membrane, insulation, fasteners and accessories to commercial roofing contractors. Two desks make good first tests: the one reading a contractor's spec and takeoff into a material package, and the one working out which preliminary notices a new job needs. Either runs as a free AI proof of concept on copies of 20 to 30 files your team already closed. Nothing logs in to your ERP or credit system, and no quote or notice goes out. Your reviewer, the person on staff who knows that desk best, lays every draft beside what your team did.

// Jobs we would test

Four jobs between the roof spec and the paid invoice

Two open now
Two later, each on its own

// Why these two first

A roof quote and a job account both leave a finished answer behind

This is a wholesale trade with its own line in the federal code. NAICS 423330 covers establishments primarily engaged in the merchant wholesale distribution of nonwood roofing and nonwood siding and insulation materials. A low-slope desk sells membrane, polyiso, fasteners, adhesive and flashing as one assembly per roof. Each closed quote left a spec, a plan, a takeoff and the lines your team chose, so a draft can be graded against work already done.

A product standard stops at the product. The public abstract for ASTM D4434, the standard specification for poly(vinyl chloride) sheet roofing, puts fire resistance, material compatibility, wind uplift and in-place shrinkage outside its scope. A line citing it says nothing about the insulation and adhesive quoted next to it. Insulation carries its own code: ASTM C1289 sorts faced polyisocyanurate board into five types, with classes and grades inside some of them. Reading those pieces together is the skill your desk has, and the thing worth testing.

Some lines are regulated at the point of sale. South Coast AQMD Rule 1168, last amended November 4, 2022, reaches anyone who sells, stores, supplies or distributes a covered product above its VOC limit, not only the crew that applies it, and it gives EPDM and TPO single ply roof membrane adhesive a line of its own at 250 grams per liter. Where the building sits can decide which adhesive belongs on the quote, so the draft notes each job's location beside its adhesive lines for a person to check.

The spec reaches into delivery and timing. Texas State University's roof insulation standard for its Round Rock campus bars insulation and cover board from sitting on the roof overnight, wants them in a covered storage trailer, and has each day's allotment loaded up and used that day. It also says materials ordered before written approval of submittals are ordered at the contractor's risk. A package quoted as one drop may not be the package that job can accept.

Notices run on state clocks, and not all of them go to the owner. Utah has suppliers file a preliminary notice on its State Construction Registry, within 20 days of beginning work on the property according to the state's own page, and property owners can look up who has filed. Other states route the same idea through the mail or a recorded notice of commencement. Your credit team already worked that out for every job account it opened, which makes a job sheet and its notice list a fair test too.

What neither test does. Neither one touches your ERP, your credit system or a live quote, and nothing gets sent or filed. No draft says a roof system qualifies for a manufacturer's warranty, and none decides what a lien statute requires. A person checks every quote, and your credit manager or counsel decides every notice. Notice rules vary by state and they change, so this is a drafting test, not legal advice.

// How the test runs

Pick one desk, run it on closed files, then decide

  1. Step 01

    Copies of closed files

    After the NDA, send 20 to 30 files from one desk: specs, roof plans and takeoffs with the quotes they became, or job information sheets with delivery records and the notice lists your credit team kept. Files that can't leave the building become look-alikes built with your team.

  2. Step 02

    Your reviewer sets the bar

    The owner names the reviewer, often the senior inside salesperson on commercial roofs or the credit manager. Success criteria go in writing and you get a price range for the live job before day one. The reviewer then reads each draft against what your team actually did.

  3. Step 03

    About 30 days live, after a yes

    The same job runs on new specs or new job accounts for about 30 days, and a person approves each item before it goes anywhere. The other desk is its own decision, with its own price, and monthly support starts once a job is running.

Priced per job. You get a range before the proof of concept and a fixed price before you sign.

Rob sets the range on the first call, from three things: how many roof packages your desk quotes in a month, how many job accounts your credit team opens, and how many states you ship into.

// Questions

What roofing supply houses ask first

Does the test connect to our ERP or credit system?
No. It runs on copies and exports of specs, takeoffs, quotes, job sheets and delivery records. Your live systems enter the picture only if the test passes and the next month is scoped, and that is priced first.
Will the AI say a roof system qualifies for a manufacturer's warranty?
No. That decision belongs to the manufacturer and the people who deal with it. The draft lists what your team should confirm against the maker's published system requirements, and your desk confirms it.
Can it file preliminary notices for our credit department?
No. It drafts a list of notices for your credit manager, each with the statute it comes from. Your credit manager or counsel decides what goes out, and your team or the service you use today sends it.
We carry several makers' membranes. Is that a problem?
It makes a better test. Your reviewer picks closed quotes across the systems you sell, so each maker's lines and accessories get read in the same sample. Nothing about the test depends on one manufacturer.
Some contractors send a spec and a takeoff, others just a plan. What goes in the sample?
Whatever your desk worked from on each job, with your own takeoff in the file if the contractor sent none. A quote built from a phone call has nothing to compare against.
