// AI for plumbing distributors

AI for plumbing distributors, tested on job quotes your desk already priced.

For plumbing and PHCP wholesale distributors selling to plumbing contractors and mechanical subs. Start with the paperwork behind a commercial job: fixture schedules and takeoffs priced as job quotes, or the releases that draw a quote down from underground to trim. A free AI proof of concept runs one of them on copies of 20 to 30 your team already finished, with no login to your ERP. Your reviewer, the person who knows that desk best, decides whether it passed, and every lead-free call stays with your own people.

// Why job quotes come first

Every job your desk bid already has an answer

The grading sheet is in your quote files. Each job your quotations desk priced left three things behind: the plans and takeoff that came in, the quote that went out, and whether you won. A proof of concept on those jobs is scored against work your team already did. Releases come second for a plain reason: they draw on the quote, so the quote has to be right first.

This trade has its own association and its own mix. ASA, the American Supply Association, describes itself as the national trade association for distributors in the PHCP and PVF supply chain: plumbing, heating, cooling and piping, and industrial pipe, valves and fittings. It counts nearly 350 distributor member companies with more than 4,000 locations across the country. One branch can hold a contractor counter, a quotations desk, a hydronics department and a kitchen and bath showroom, each with paperwork of its own.

Lead free started in the states. The federal Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act was signed on January 4, 2011 and took effect 36 months later, modeled on California's 2006 law, AB 1953. Vermont, Maryland and Louisiana passed lead reduction laws of their own, and IAPMO R&T, the certification arm of the association that publishes the Uniform Plumbing Code, began listing products to low-lead laws in 2008.

The rule reaches your shelves, not only the factory. EPA's guide on lead-free marks says a product that isn't lead free can't be introduced into commerce, stocked inventory included. Its 2020 rule names wholesalers, distributors and resellers among those it applies to, even though only manufacturers and importers do the certifying. So the record behind each potable-water line matters at your desk, and on these pages the AI drafts and cites while a person on your team makes the call.

// How it runs

One desk at a time, in three steps

  1. Step 01

    Copies of finished work

    After the NDA, send 20 to 30 finished examples of one job: bid requests with the quotes your desk sent, or releases with the orders keyed from them and the job quotes behind them. Nothing connects to your systems, and plans that can't leave become look-alikes built with your reviewer.

  2. Step 02

    Your reviewer grades it

    Before day one, the owner names the reviewer, the success criteria go in writing (including who makes each lead-free call), and you get a price range for the live job. Your reviewer then sets each draft beside your team's own work.

  3. Step 03

    About 30 days live, after a yes

    The same job runs on new work for about 30 days. A person approves every quote and every order before it goes anywhere. The other desk is a separate decision, tested and priced on its own.

Each job carries its own price: a range before the proof of concept, a fixed figure before you sign.

Rob gives the range on the call, once he knows how many bid requests or releases your desk handles in a month, how many branches quote jobs, and how many contractors usually bid the same job.

// Questions

What plumbing distributors ask first

Will the AI tell us whether a product is lead free?
No. It shows the record behind each drinking-water line, such as a spec sheet or certificate from your files, and labels the product types federal law exempts. Whether a product goes on a potable line is decided by the person your owner names.
We sell residential and commercial. Which should we test?
Commercial job quotes usually make the cleaner test, because each job comes with a fixture schedule, a takeoff and a quote to compare. Builder and showroom work can follow later as a job of its own, tested on its own documents.
Do you need access to our ERP?
No. The proof of concept runs on copies and spreadsheet exports, so Eclipse, Prophet 21, an Infor system or an older package all look the same to it. The live run is the first time your ERP comes into it, and that work is scoped and priced before you sign.
Can we start with releases instead of quotes?
Yes, if releases take more of your desk's day. A release can only be judged against the quote it drew on, so that sample comes with the job quotes behind it.
Who should our reviewer be?
For quotes, the quotations manager or the salesperson who prices your largest mechanical jobs. For releases, the project desk lead who checks orders against the job. The owner picks one of them, and the test passes or fails on their call.
