Custom casework, wall panels, reception desks

// AI for architectural millwork manufacturers

AI for architectural millwork manufacturers, tested on casework jobs you already bid and built.

For shops building custom casework, wall panels and reception desks for hospitals, schools, offices and hospitality projects. Choose one desk to start: casework schedule quotes read from interior elevations and the Division 06 and 12 specification, or quality program files assembled from your own records. Either one becomes a free AI proof of concept on copies of 20 to 30 old bids or closed projects. Nobody logs in to your estimating, shop drawing or ERP system. Your reviewer, the person on your staff who knows that desk best, decides whether it passed.

// Why these two first

A closed casework job already shows what the right answer was

Every closed job is its own answer key. The bid set your estimator worked from, the quote sheet that went out, the approved shop drawings and the certification file usually sit in one project folder. A proof of concept on those folders is graded against what your team wrote down at the time and what the job turned out to need, with nothing new to collect.

Casework is divided before it reaches you. The Architectural Woodwork Institute's guide to its standards lists ANSI/AWI 0641 for architectural wood casework, 1232 for manufactured wood casework, 1235 for specialty casework, 1236 for countertops and 0642 for wall surfacing, numbers that echo the sections of a project manual. The University of Maryland, Baltimore makes the split explicit: its 2022 wood laboratory casework section cites SEFA 8 W and sends custom casework in rooms other than labs to Division 6. A single renovation can need several of those documents read together.

Grade and duty are separate calls. AWI's page on how its standards work describes three aesthetic grades, Economy, Custom and Premium, with Premium holding the tightest control over materials, workmanship and manufacture. Four performance duty levels sit apart from them: Light Commercial, Commercial, Institutional and Laboratory. Someone has to notice which of those a job's documents actually state, and the draft records only what they state.

Owners add rules no drawing shows. Case Western Reserve University's design guidelines, updated October 29, 2025, call for AWI Premium on laminate and veneer cabinets, a fabricator certified in AWI's program, manufacture within 100 miles of the site, FSC-certified wood, and composite products and adhesives free of urea formaldehyde. Northern Arizona University's technical standards, updated March 4, 2025, assume casework lasts the life of the building, which they take as 50 years, allow particleboard as core stock in low or no moisture areas under high-pressure laminate, and refuse painted particleboard as a finish. A rule like the 100-mile line decides whether your shop can bid at all.

A certified project is a paper trail with its own rules. AWI's Quality Certification Program keeps a firm's license apart from a project's certification. A 2021 program explainer counts 35 separate licenses tied to categories of woodwork, casework, wall paneling, finishing and laminate countertops among them, and says only the scope a firm's licenses cover can be certified. Albuquerque Public Schools approves casework makers on the strength of current participation in the program. The file that proves all this is put together in the office, from records kept in several places, so old projects show how complete each one really was.

Healthcare raises one more question. A resource list the Facility Guidelines Institute published for its 2010 Guidelines gives casework, millwork and built-ins their own heading under preferred surface characteristics such as being easy to maintain and clean, pointing readers to ANSI/NEMA LD 3 for high-pressure decorative laminates and ANSI/ICPA-SS-1 for solid surface materials. Whether a surface suits a patient area stays with the design team and your people; the draft records what the documents ask for.

One limit covers both jobs. The proof of concept never touches your estimating, shop drawing or ERP system or a live quote, and it never decides that work meets a grade or that a product is acceptable. Each quote sheet gets an estimator's check, and each quality question goes to your quality person and the program's inspector. Standards and rules are cited here so your people can read them; nothing on this page is legal advice.

// How the test runs

Three steps at one desk

  1. Step 01

    Name the desk and the reviewer

    Your owner picks the job and names the reviewer, often the chief estimator for quote sheets and the quality or project manager for certification files. Written success criteria, a price range for the live job and a signed NDA all come before any project file moves.

  2. Step 02

    Run it on copies of old work

    Send 20 to 30 past bids with their elevations, schedules, specification sections and quote sheets, or 20 to 30 closed projects with their certification records. We call this stage the sandbox: a free AI proof of concept on paperwork your team has already handled. Files that have to stay in the building become look-alikes, built with your reviewer.

  3. Step 03

    Compare, then a month of live work

    Each draft sits beside the sheet or file your team really produced, and your reviewer's call settles it. After a yes, the same job runs on new work for about 30 days, with a person approving every item before it goes anywhere. Any next job is its own decision at its own price, with monthly support after that.

Priced per job. You get a range before the proof of concept and a fixed price before you sign.

On the call Rob sets the range from three counts: casework bids your estimators price in a month, elevations on a typical bid, and projects that carry a quality certification requirement.

// Questions

What shop owners ask first

Does this connect to our estimating, shop drawing or ERP software?
No. The test runs on copies and exports you send, whatever produced them, and connects to nothing. Should a live job follow, the route from draft to your desk gets written into its fixed price.
Will the AI tell us whether a job meets Premium or Custom grade?
No. It records the grade the documents call for and where they call for it. Whether work meets a grade, or whether a product is acceptable, stays with your quality person and the program's inspector.
We build custom casework and also manufactured or laboratory casework. Can one test cover that?
Your reviewer picks the mix, and a sample that follows your real work is the fair one. A job specified in Division 06 and a job specified in Division 12 can sit in the same test, because each draft names the section it read.
We don't hold a quality certification license. Is there still a test for us?
Yes. Casework schedule quotes need no license at all, and that is the job marked to start with. The quality file test only makes sense if some of your closed projects carried a certification requirement.
Should hospital and school work be in the sample?
Yes, if you build for those owners. Universities and school districts often publish their own casework standards, so a sample of private office jobs alone would test only part of the desk.
Would you talk to our architects, general contractors or inspector?
No. During the test nothing goes to an architect, a general contractor, a supplier, an inspector or a program office. Drafts reach your reviewer alone, and whether a question they raise ever leaves the shop is your call.
